Maintaining a healthy lifestyle may seem impossible at times; especially if you currently find yourself stuck in a rut with unhealthy habits or poor health choices. Healthy habits are achievable and palpable once you know these secrets to maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
The following are 5 secrets you need to know to get yourself healthier–and happier.
1. A balanced diet is better than a strict diet
It can be tempting to create an ultra-strict diet for yourself, but while strict diets may help you lose weight and improve health short-term, they are rarely sustainable over the long term. It’s more important to cultivate a balanced diet–that is, a diet that is both healthy with occasional indulgences–than it is to be extremely strict.
2. Replace unhealthy drinks with water gradually
Drinking too many unhealthy drinks, such as sugary soda pop or juice, can lead to some serious health problems over time. You should replace all of your unhealthy drinks gradually over time to help your body and taste buds adjust to drinking water with your snacks and meals. Again, as per #1, this doesn’t mean you can never drink soda pop again: but it should be considered a special treat and not a regular beverage with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
3. Eat fruits and vegetables with every meal
Most people do not eat enough fruits and vegetables. The best way to establish a habit of eating enough fruits and vegetables is to make a rule to include them in every meal. For example, add a cup of strawberries to breakfast; a serving of broccoli and carrots to lunch; and a large dark green salad as a side dish at dinner.
4. Make daily exercise more enjoyable
Getting daily exercise can be hard if you find exercising to be a chore. You can make a habit of daily exercise by finding some activities you enjoy. This way you’ll more likely to incorporate it into your regular routine. For example, if you enjoy dancing, taking a dance class or follow dance videos at home. If you love nature, you can do regular bike rides on a nature trail line during the day.
5. Get a good night’s sleep every night
Most people do not get nearly enough sleep, which can be disastrous for their health. You should strive to get at least 8 hours of sleep per night. The best way to get enough sleep every night is to establish a proper bedtime routine.
It would help to stay away from electronic devices for at least an hour before bedtime. Use your bed for sleeping purposes only, and play relaxing music or sounds to prepare yourself to sleep. Make sure to start your bedtime routine early so you can get at least 8 hours of sleep per night.
